{"id":992,"date":"2026-03-03T11:18:33","date_gmt":"2026-03-03T11:18:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/de.vivosight.com\/?p=992"},"modified":"2026-03-16T14:23:48","modified_gmt":"2026-03-16T14:23:48","slug":"study-finds-dynamic-oct-can-distinguish-nevi-and-melanomas-based-on-blood-vessel-morphology","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/de.vivosight.com\/en\/study-finds-dynamic-oct-can-distinguish-nevi-and-melanomas-based-on-blood-vessel-morphology\/","title":{"rendered":"Study finds Dynamic OCT can distinguish nevi and melanomas based on blood vessel morphology"},"content":{"rendered":"<section  class=\"basicContent section-padding\" data-pt=\"100\" data-pb=\"100\" data-pt-mobile=\"60\" data-pb-mobile=\"60\">\n  <div class=\"basicContent__container container container--large\">\n\n    <div class=\"basicContent__wrap\">\n      <div class=\"basicContent__text wysiwyg\" data-aos=\"fade-up\">\n        <p>The study, published in Cancers clinical journal, showed that VivoSight\u2019s powerful Dynamic OCT (D-OCT) capability for detecting and imaging blood vessels in skin has the potential to help dermatologists non-invasively distinguish melanomas from suspicious nevi in unclear cases.<\/p>\n<p>According to the paper authors, adding D-OCT imaging to clinic-dermoscopic examination may:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>improve diagnostic approach to unclear melanocytic lesions<\/li>\n<li>limit unnecessary biopsies<\/li>\n<li>accelerate and individualise the treatment plan<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In the study, D-OCT images of 167 nevi and 159 melanomas were analysed for differences in the blood vessel shapes, density and diameter:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>melanomas and nevi were recognised with predictive values of 96.8% and 88.2% respectively from consistent differences in these properties in the two groups.<\/li>\n<li>in the study population, 16% of unnecessary biopsies of the nevi could have been avoided by use of this information.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Future research aims include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Setting a measure of observer proficiency in D-OCT scan evaluation<\/li>\n<li>Automatic software to recognize and outline lesions<\/li>\n<li>Integration with teledermatology<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The study was performed by researchers at University Hospital of Augsburg, Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, and University of Modena and Reggio Emilia.<\/p>\n<p>Perwein MK, Welzel J, De Carvalho N, Pellacani G, Schuh S.
